Asphalt Crew Leader

Are you tired of not being respected (or ahem, financially rewarded) for being a reliable, hard worker, and a good leader? If you enjoy:

  • Solving problems on the fly
  • Getting your hands (and likely the rest of your body pretty) dirty
  • Leading and problem solving with your team
  • Having a stable job with winters off, good pay, and clear opportunities for advancement
  • Working alongside super skilled people that are also a really good hang

Us too.

Sounds like you should apply for the Asphalt Crew Leader position at our growing company.

Stripe A Lot’s asphalt teams are the backbone of our company and the reason customers love us. Our teams spend the majority of their workday outside, repairing and sealcoating asphalt to provide customers with asphalt that looks great and lasts longer. We’re not gonna lie – it’s hard work, but it’s necessary because good blacktop keeps our world humming. And we need solid crew leaders to keep everything on track.

When you unlace your boots at the end of a full day with Stripe A Lot, you’ll know you accomplished something you can be proud of.

As part of your job, you will:

  • Manage a small but mighty crew
  • Assign daily work tasks
  • Ensure the work quality stays up to par
  • Make sure your crew stays safe by following the proper procedures
  • Train new employees
  • Provide performance feedback

Yes, we know it sounds like a lot (because it is), but Joe and Nick, our father-son ownership team, will have your back. We want you to succeed – and help our crews get the job done safely. If you bring a solid work ethic, the ability to think on your feet, and rally a team around a common cause, we want to talk.

The people who love this job and do well in this Asphalt Crew Leader position are:

Hard workers who enjoy the Great Outdoors. Does the thought of sitting behind a desk all day make you want to bang your head against the wall? Good, because you’ll be working outside, getting dirty, breaking a sweat, and getting stuff done. If you’re okay with some sore muscles and smelly laundry, you’re golden.

Able to maintain your cool under pressure. This work is intense and the days move fast. We’re looking for people who can think fast and problem solve quickly even under stress. Every job description says they work in a “fast-paced environment,” but we actually direct traffic!

Good at managing projects and people. Sure, this job is ultimately about laying asphalt, but our Crew Leaders also lead people. That’s why we’re looking for people who will do more than carry a clipboard and look important. You must be a good communicator, be willing to work hard alongside your crew, and know how to create team cohesion.

Education, Skills & Experience:

  • Previous experience in asphalt maintenance is required.
  • 2+ year experience leading a team/crew/people is preferred.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record and dependable transportation is required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, bend, stretch and lift is required.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions is required.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug test is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions is required.
  • Ability to read, write, and do basic mathematical calculations is preferred.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B is a plus.
  • Ability to operate a Skid Steer or Bobcat is a plus.
  • Knowledge of using hand tools, such as shovels, wheelbarrows, asphalt hand rollers, asphalt rakes, scrapers, brooms, and hand brushes is required.

Who is Stripe A Lot:

We are West Michigan’s asphalt maintenance experts. For more than 36 years, our family has helped homeowners and business owners take care of their asphalt surfaces. Here’s what you should know about us:

  • We don’t cut corners.
  • We resurface/maintain millions of square feet a year.
  • We’re trusted by the Holland community, and have earned Holland’s “Best of the Best” for years in a row.

What’s important to us:

Integrity. We do the right thing regardless of who’s watching. We do honest work we can be proud of. We’re straight shooters. We’re going to tell you the truth about your performance, your hours, and what you can do to get ahead.

Respect. We respect our employees and their hard work and dedication. We respect our customers and the trust they place in us. We respect our craft. We know there is no such thing as unskilled labor.

Quality. We have top-quality equipment and maintain it well (Our co-owner, Joe insists you should be able to see your reflection in the side of our trucks). We try hard to be good leaders, so you feel valued and know where you stand. We also reward (moolah) quality work with raises and promotions.

When do you work:

Asphalt maintenance work is seasonal, and the Michigan season is short. That means we work hard for seven months, April–October. We all work seven days a week, Monday–Sunday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., plus some holidays. Asphalt work is weather-dependent, so a specific number of hours each week is not guaranteed.

At the end of each season, we’ll discuss whether you’ll re-join the team next year.

What is the compensation:

Starting pay from $25 an hour and up, depending on your willingness to work hard, learn, and be a dedicated team member.

Yearly raises are based on your employee review.

Annual bonus pay is available for reaching and exceeding set goals.

We have a referral program that rewards you for recruiting members to the team. You’ll earn $1 for every hour your recruits work.

A more detailed conversation will take place if you are called for an interview.

What are the benefits:

This position does not include health insurance, paid time off, or retirement benefits.

What happens next:

  1. Apply today.
Either click the “Apply” button or come down to our office and fill out an application.
  2. Complete two interviews.
Your application will be reviewed instantly, and if you’re qualified, you’ll schedule a phone interview. If the phone interview goes well, you’ll be asked to come to our office in Holland for an in-person interview. We want to meet you and show you around the place.
  3. Say “Yes!” and pave your way to a better future. If we both feel like it’s a good fit and your references check out, we’ll offer you the position. There’s some paperwork to complete, but we’ll want to introduce you to your crew and start training you on our process as soon as possible.
